Achieving Civility Excellence! Best Practices to Foster Healthy Work Environments

Presented by

Cynthia Clark, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN; Boise State University

Description

Incivility and other forms of workplace aggression can have far-reaching effects on individuals, teams, organizations, and patient care. In healthcare, acts of incivility can lead to greater risk of harm and higher levels of staff burnout, absenteeism, and turnover. Conversely, fostering a healthy work environment increases job satisfaction and employee morale and optimizes patient outcomes. So, imagine an enjoyable workplace—an environment where you and your colleagues can truly thrive in your profession and career. This engaging session provides an empirical understanding of workplace incivility, its impact on individuals, teams, organizations—and evidence-based strategies to build and sustain healthy work environments.

Learner Objectives

  1. Define civility, incivility, and other forms of workplace aggression.
  2. Describe the impact of incivility on individuals, teams, organizations, and patient care.
  3. Explore individual & organizational competencies to foster healthy work environments.

Part 2 - Oct 8, 3pm Eastern
The Incivility Crisis in Public Policy: The Ethical Responsibilities of Nurses and Attorneys Engaged in Electoral Politics

Presented by

Sofia Aragon, JD, BSN, RN, FAAN

Description

Many nurses and attorneys are politically engaged and even serve in public office. We are in an era of increased polarization and divisiveness in the political sphere. Prominent leaders in government behave as if civility is a relic of the past. Important community issues degenerate into personal attacks – both between elected officials and between elected officials and the public. Arguably, more people will be inclined to participate in a public deliberative process that focuses on the merits and demerits of an issue, as opposed to focused on personal attacks. Incivility undermines the democratic process when it discourages public participation.

Learner Objectives

  1. Describe ethical implications for nurses in public office involved in incivility.
  2. Describe ethical implications for attorneys in public office involved incivility.
  3. Provide examples of strategies to address incivility by voters and elected officials.
