The Value of Nurses on Boards: An Inaugural Survey

In 2023, The Nurses on Boards Coalition conducted an inaugural survey to demonstrate the value of nurses serving on governing boards. This presentation will discuss the findings and implications of the research. We hope you can join us, please share broadly within your network.

Learner Objectives

  1. Participants will identify how nurses serving on governing boards are impacting the social determinants of health. 
  2. Participants will discuss three key implications of the research findings.


Kimberly Ann Cleveland, PhD, JD, MSN, RN, C-MBC, C-MPC; Board Chair Emeritus, Nurses on Boards Coalition; Associate Professor Kent State University

Dr. Cleveland is an experienced nurse attorney, academic, and international speaker. She is an invited speaker on topics related to nurse leadership, health law, healthcare economics, and health policy. She led the development of the NOBC inaugural survey with Pam Rudisill.

Pam Rudisill, DNP, MSN, RN, NEC-BC, FAONL, FAAN; Board Chair Emeritus, Nurses on Boards Coalition; Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer; Community Health System

Dr. Rudisill is an experienced nurse leader with extensive experience in health care delivery and nursing leadership. She is a nationally recognized nurse leader and past president of AONL. Pam Rudisill is Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Community Health Systems (CHS). In her role, she supports nurses with quality, safety, patient experience, and nursing workforce resources as they deliver patient care across more than 71 affiliated hospitals in 15 states. In addition, Pam is also involved with developing, implementing, and evaluating innovations in Team Based Nursing Models of Care and Virtual Nursing. Pam serves as the board chair emeritus and Board of Directors for NOBC. Through Pam’s tenure as board chair and chair emeritus, NOBC conducted the inaugural Value of Nurses on Boards survey IRB research in 2022-2023. Her other memberships include the AONL, where she served a term as president in 2010; American Academy of Nursing being inducted as a Fellow in 2011. She has published extensively in nursing literature and has spoken at national health care seminars throughout the United States. Pam has earned certification as a Board Certified Nursing Administrator Advanced (NEA-BC) through ANCC. Pam received her Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Duke University. In 2019 Pam was an inductee as a Fellow in the inaugural class of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (FAONL).

Anthony Vander Horst is a professor at Kent State University and Chief Statistician and Methodologist for the Kent State Survey Research Lab.

Amber Hankins is a research assistant at Kent State University.
