Description

Representation matters. Diverse voices at policy-making tables lead to public policy that is more representative of the community it serves. However, nursing’s voice is missing from many of those tables. We now know the number of nurses in elected office is decreasing, not increasing. Let’s change that! During this webinar we will discuss the importance of representation in politics, why nurse attorneys are uniquely qualified to run for elected office, and how to get started. There are 3.5 million nurses in the United States and while we won’t all run for office, the millions of us that don’t can help those that do. Learner Objectives Define “representation” in the political context. Identify the skills and expertise that makes nurse attorneys uniquely qualified to run for elected office at every level - local, state, or federal. Describe what the participant can do to increase the representation of nurses in elected office. Presenter Kimberly Gordon, DNP, CRNA; Nurse Attorneys as Leaders, Advocates, & Legislators Kimberly is a former cost and budget accountant and current certified registered nurse anesthetist with 22 years of political engagement, campaign work, and advocacy experience at the state and federal level. She has held leadership positions in the corporate world, the healthcare industry, and in multiple professional nursing organizations. Kimberly also teaches policy/advocacy and leadership courses to doctoral nursing students. She believes that nurses working together could, quite literally, change the world.
