How to Avoid Common Pitfalls and Protect Your Nursing License
  • Janet E. Michael, RN, MS, JD
Law Office of Janet E. Michael; Portland, Maine

Course Description

Although nurses frequently worry that sometime within their nursing career they may be sued for something that they actually did or something that they failed to do which caused patient harm, a nurse is far more likely to be reported to her Board of Nursing than she is to be sued for any type of nursing malpractice during the course of her nursing career. Nurses need to understand the types of errors or omissions that may result in a Board of Nursing complaint and more importantly how to avoid the common pitfalls that lead to such a complaint. This interactive pre-conference seminar will help nurses to identify:

  • Warning signs of a potential complaint to your Board of Nursing
  • What to do when your agency or facility threatens to report you to the Board of Nursing
  • Frequently seen types of complaints and what to do to avoid them
  • Documentation strategies to protect your nursing license
  • The complaint process once you have been reported to your Board of Nursing
  • The potential impact of a board of nursing complaint
  • The potential impact of the current opioid crisis on your nursing practice
  • Why drug diversion & impairment issues top the list of complaints to Boards of Nursing
  • What nurses need to know about jurisdiction, the Nurse Licensure Compact, & NURSYS
  • Why every nurse should have a personal nursing malpractice insurance policy
